Looks like the UK may be realising the error of their gun ban and other nanny policies...

Dear Chris Matthews, We Tried Your Way And It Has Failed...
MSNBC's Hardball host Chris Matthews-
MATTHEWS: "You know what I think? In big cities they ought to check people on sidewalks like they do getting on airplanes. And why an airplane should be safer than an American sidewalk is crazy to me. Why you can walk down the streets of an American city carrying a concealed weapon without a license is wacky."
MATTHEWS: "I want people disarmed in our major, major cities. How's that for a plan? I don't think we should all be armed, and I don't think more guns is the answer. I think it's wacky to say that the solution to armed robbery and killing in our streets in big cities is to put more arms in the streets. Anyway, thank you Deroy."
Dear Chris,
We have tried your way and it has failed. EVERY SINGLE gun ban has INCREASED violence. IF we could 100% remove guns from an area the only thing that would happen is an increase in stabbing and other violent crimes. Some of us are smarter than a door-knob and don't need to get burned multiple times to learn that fire is hot.
Sincerely,
P

"Handgun Bans Don't Work" - DUH!

If restricting ownership of handguns among ordinary law-abiding citizens had a positive impact on crime, our existing laws would already have produced the benefits. Since 1934, anyone wanting to own a pistol in Canada has had to be registered with the RCMP or the federal gun registry. The application process is long and arduous. The fact that almost no registered handgun owner ever commits murder or other forms of violent crime in Canada (one of the recent Toronto shootings being a noteworthy exception) is a testament to the thoroughness of the background checks.
On top of that, since the early 1990s, Canada's 500,000 or so handgun owners have had to have police approval to move their guns from their homes, and even then may only move them under the strictest of conditions. Typically, owners must lock their guns in a tamper-resistant case, which must further be locked in the trunks of their cars. Then they must drive directly from their homes to an approved shooting range and back, making no stops along the way -- even for gas or a restroom break.
None of this has stopped handguns from becoming the gun of choice for murderers, though. Among murders committed with firearms, handguns are now used in nearly two-thirds. That's up from just one-third less than 20 years ago.
Elsewhere, too, handgun bans have proved useless. Washington, D.C., for instance, which routinely ranks among America's murder capitals, has had a ban on handgun ownership for more than 30 years. Luxembourg prohibits private handgun ownership altogether, yet has a murder rate nine times that of Norway, which has one of the highest rates of firearms ownership in all Europe. After a massacre of elementary school students and their teacher at Dunblane, Scotland, in 1996, the British government confiscated all handguns from their registered owners across Great Britain. Yet since then, Britain's rate of violent crime has soared.

Anti-gun Bias At The Washington Post... Surprising?
Sailorcurt over at Captain Of A Crew Of One
Caught this gem of media bias-
Via Bitter, we discover this piece of...um...reportage...regarding [Virginia] Lobby day. Bitter's post focused on the anger of the anti-gun attendees which I commented upon in my original post; however, something different in the article caught my eye:
Hundreds of advocates flooded the state Capitol on Monday to urge the Virginia General Assembly to enact reforms on such issues as the environment, immigration and gun control.
...
Gun-control advocates, including survivors of the April 16 shooting rampage that took the lives of 32 victims at Virginia Tech, poured into a Senate committee meeting to support a bill that would require background checks for all gun-show sales. They then staged a "lie-in," lying on their backs outside the Capitol to draw attention to gun deaths in Virginia last year.
...
Many gun-rights activists also showed up at the committee meeting -- some wearing guns -- and came in force to watch the protest.
Notice the carefully crafted use of terms designed to give a visual of "hundreds" of anti-gun protesters "pouring" into the capital. And then the weak mention of "many gun-rights activists."
One is left with the distinct impression that the gun rights activists were in the minority.
This is prima facia evidence of the bias of the media in reporting. This piece was carefully crafted to paint a misleading picture. They didn't report anything factually inaccurate. In their account of "hundreds" they lumped the gun-control proponents together with environmentalists and other activists to maintain technical accuracy. No, it wasn't an outright lie, but this is a prime example of "spin." Carefully selecting phrases to paint a misleading or inaccurate picture.
Gun rights supporters outnumbered the anti-gun forces by AT LEAST two to one. Not only that, but the anti-gun groups freely admitted that they were actively busing people in from all over the state to bolster their numbers. Every gun rights activist that was there got there on their own motivation, on their own dime and of their own volition.

Alamo Drafthouse is NOT CHL friendly
Apparently Alamo Draft House in Austin, Texas has decided to make themselves a 'Shoot People at Will' place (aka a gun free zone)-
DVDTracker over at the AR-15 forums posts this:
Took the wife there today to see I am Legend and I saw a 30.06 sign posted on the box office. The wording was correct but it did not appear to be large enough. Regardless, I'm sending them this e-mail later today and will be CCing all their locations.
I've been a fan of Alamo Draft House since moving here a few years ago. The combination of great food, mainstream and off-beat movies makes it my first choice when picking a theater. However, my recent trip to the Lake Creek location made me feel like an unwelcome customer.
As I was purchasing tickets, I saw a Texas Penal Code 30.06 sign on the box office which states, "PURSUANT TO SECTION 30.06, PENAL CODE (TRESPASS BY HOLDER OF A LICENSE TO CARRY A CONCEALED HANDGUN) A PERSON LICENSED UNDER SUBCHAPTER H, CHAPTER 411, GOVERNMENT CODE (CONCEALED HANDGUN LAW), MAY NOT ENTER THIS PROPERTY WITH A CONCEALED HANDGUN." I was actually a bit insulted to see this. Getting a concealed handgun license involves fingerprinting, background checks and a mandatory ten-hour training class with a licensed instructor. It's extremely rare for a licensee to ever need to use their handgun. It's also extremely rare to have a licensee convicted of any crime. Police are generally more at-ease if they encounter a licensee during a routine traffic stop. They know that we've done the training, fingerprinting, background checks and have jumped through the hoops to obey the law and we're on their side.
Is disheartening to see such a good business that enjoys the protection of the 1st Amendment by offering a wide variety of movies and entertainment treat those that enjoy the protection of the 2nd as unwelcome customers. If Alamo Draft House truly does not want law-abiding concealed handgun licensees as their customers, then I will take my business elsewhere.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply.

The 'Columbine' 14yo Penn. Boy...
Regarding the 14yo Pennsylvania brat that was going to shoot up Plymouth Whitemarsh-

So far, I haven't seen any mention of this on the blogs so let me be the first...
Okay, Nancey Grace is on the TV hyping this story like it's a cute white girl that's gone missing...
They've paraded the pictures of the weapons and she's commmented so far on how dangerous (my wording) they all look.
Let me point out this-
So far here's a listing of the weapons:
- A '9mm assault rifle' (which there were no bullets).
- A handful of EMPTY magazines for the above mentioned 'assault rifle'.
- A homemade 'hand grenade'.
- 30 BB guns.
- A few knives.
- A book on bomb making.
Let me also note that the "9mm Assault Rifle" looks like a plain-ole long-barreled 30cal AK-47 (NOT a 9mm, 30cal is smaller). I may be wrong but, going by the 'gun-knowledge' of your average reporter, I pretty sure that the media is wrong on that point also.
I don't know about you but, I don't think he could have done much damage with a bullet-less rifle, a homemade handgrenade (which probably works as well as most kid made explosive devices), some BB guns and a few knives...
Do I think this kid was trying to do something, YES. Do I think he should be arrested, YES. Hell, he should be locked up for about 50years for this stunt!
I'm just amazed how the dinosaur-media is hyping this story! I await the next round of howls for gun-control. What we need is BRAT-CONTROL!
UPDATE: The mom, Michele Cossey, has been arrested for buying the guns for the brat.

Google discriminates!
Say Uncle just got a nasty-gram from the boys at Google telling him to basically kiss off because his site mentions guns...
While reviewing your account, we noticed that you are currently displaying Google ads in a manner that is not compliant with our policies. For instance, we found violations of AdSense policies on pages such as thegunblogs.com.
As stated in our program policies, AdSense publishers are not permitted to place Google ads on sites with content related to certain weapons and weapon accessories, such as firearms, balisongs, butterfly knives, and brass knuckles.
As a result, we have disabled ad serving to the site.
The funny thing is that I noticed that where Goggle has problems with sites mentioning guns, they have absolutely no qualms with taking money from advertisers that sell things such as air-guns, "gunshot ringtones", and even GUNS (eBay ad)! (Taken FROM Say Uncle's site)
Not only do they take money from those advertisers, They have no problem advertising sexual items or even prostitution!

Gunman on St. John's University Campus

The anti-gun kooks are going to have a field day with this one... They are going to say "OMG! HE WAS CARRYING A .50CAL GUN!!!".
I haven't seen this pointed out yet but, let me make you, my readers, aware that he was carrying a .50cal single shot, black-powder gun! You know, circa 1776 technology. It's the kind where you dump powder in the barrel, put in some wadding, and then add a lead bullet and ram it all with a rod between shots. IF he was planning on going on a killing rampage, he wouldn't have gotten very far.
Of course, in this day and age, we have taught our kids to be cowering helpless do-not-defend-yourself lumps of flesh so, may he could have reloaded each shot while the targets cowered in a corner...

AMMO BUY TODAY! AUG 28th...
David over at The War On Guns points out that today we should be buying ammo. I know I'll definitely be stopping on the way home...
Here's David's blog entry:
August 28 Ammo Buy
This is the only post I'm going to make today, and I'll make it brief.
WarOnGuns regulars know about today's proposed ammo buy as a counterprotest to the Pfleger/Jackson Citizen Disarmament Mobfest and Rabble-Rousin' Jamboree.
The rest of today's posts are yours, via comments. Please tell us:
Your name or screen name
What you bought
How much you bought
Where you bought it (name of store or range), including the city
Did the gun store or range help promote the ammo buy, and if so, what did they do?
If you like, you can tell us how much you spent, but that's optional.
Please restrict your comments to that information.
This post will remain up until 12:00 midnight. I'll determine a "winner" via random drawing from all entries. As previously mentioned, the victor will receive a handsome Red's Trading Post cap, courtesy of WoG reader "Sam."
One last thing--I thought about requiring some sort of proof of purchase, but that's the government's MO to consider people suspect right off the bat. We operate on the honor system here at WarOnGuns. When I announce the winner tomorrow, it will be up to them to contact me at dcodrea at hotmail dot com to claim the prize.
Go on over to his blog and let him know what you bought!

Liberals Lose Logic.
The left's arguments are 99.99% always emotion based and not logic/reality based.
Here's an example:
Emotion is what wins arguments, and there is a tremendous amount of emotion among those fighting to reduce gun violence -- there always is when someone gets hurt or must go through the tragedies that we experience in this country as a result of gun violence.
...
That is important emotion, and it will do more for the argument for stronger gun laws than any facts or figures ever will.
...
We have to show legislators the human side of this issue, too, and force them to base their own decisions and policies off of that emotion...
An excerpt from Emory University Professor of Psychology Drew Westen's book The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation.

Gun Buy-Back Successfully Removes An 1851 Black Powder Revolver From Our Streets
Ahab over at What would John Wayne do? explains it best:

Assholes destroy antique revolver. Pretty much your standard fare for a gun buyback program, actually. If you look at the picture, the "antique" revolver looks like a brass frame (not gold plated) '51 Navy Colt.
To look at the flipside of the coin, suppose for a moment that the revolver wasn't an antique. That means that they were successful in remove a blackpowder, muzzleloading revolver "from the streets". Now, I don't have any statistics handy on use of '51 Colts in crime, but I'm guessing that they haven't been the "gun of choice" for criminals since about 1870 or so. Just guessing, though.
gun buybacks don't actually do anything. The article mentions that each gun was checked by federal authorities to see if it was used in a crime. Do you think that some gangbanger is going to swing on by and drop his Lorcin off into the hands of the waiting fuzz so they can link the gun to him? Of course not. He's going to toss that gun into the river, or give it to one of his friends, etc.
...16 WHOLE GUNS. Good job there, guys. Way to make us safer by destroying Grandpa's old 12 Gauge side by side duck gun. Assholes.

Federal gun registry has not improved public safety despite costing taxpayers more than $2 billion
Canada's homicide rate and number of gang-related murders has increased since the federal government's firearms registry and licensing program was implemented, an indication that the program has failed to improve public safety, according to Hubris in the North, The Canadian Firearms Registry, a new report from independent research organization The Fraser Institute.

Antigun leader commits a gun-felony and gets away with it.
David Hardy at "Of Arms & The Law" explained it best:
John Rosenthal, of Stop Handgun Violence and American Hunters and Shooters Association, went on a radio show to discuss his latest anti-NRA billboard, and in the process explained how he'd made a straw man purchase at an out of state gun show, after licensed dealers refuse to sell to him.
Not that he'd have to worry about prosecution, of course. Which is why he felt free to confess to a federal felony over the radio. Oh, and the Boston Globe paid for the buy.
