Jury Nullification - Something ALL Jurors Should Know About!

Jury Nullification is a power that the common people have to get rid of bad laws. Most people do not know of it's existance.

How it works is this, when someone is brought to trial on charges, the jury finds him Not Guilty inspite of overwhelming evidence of his violation. Once the person is found not guilty (usually by one vote), he can no longer be tried for the crime.

The benefit of this is that the finding of not guilty can be used in future trials as proof that the law is bad and it will eventually go away.

One thing to note is that many judges do not want juries to know of thier power and will remove jurors whom they suspect may excercise their nullification power.

HERE'S A GOOD WRITE-UP ON JURY NULLIFICATION.

Worst injured soldier ever to survive is awarded less than RAF typist with a sore thumb

Ben Parkinson volunteered to serve his country on the Afghan front line - and paid a terrible price.

The young paratrooper suffered a total of 37 terrible injuries when he was blown up by a landmine.

He lost both his legs and sustained grievous damage to his spine, skull, pelvis, hands, spleen and ribcage, leaving him in a coma for months.

Incredibly, 23-year-old Ben is still alive almost a year later - according to his doctors the most badly-injured soldier ever to survive.

Yet as recompense for his ruined life, Ben has been offered only £152,150 - little more than half the maximum award for maimed military personnel and less than a third of the £484,000 doled out to an RAF typist who claimed she had suffered repetitive strain injury to her thumb.

Way to go Britian!

AMMO BUY TODAY! AUG 28th...

David over at The War On Guns points out that today we should be buying ammo. I know I'll definitely be stopping on the way home...

Here's David's blog entry:

August 28 Ammo Buy

This is the only post I'm going to make today, and I'll make it brief.

WarOnGuns regulars know about today's proposed ammo buy as a counterprotest to the Pfleger/Jackson Citizen Disarmament Mobfest and Rabble-Rousin' Jamboree.

The rest of today's posts are yours, via comments. Please tell us:

Your name or screen name
What you bought
How much you bought
Where you bought it (name of store or range), including the city
Did the gun store or range help promote the ammo buy, and if so, what did they do?
If you like, you can tell us how much you spent, but that's optional.

Please restrict your comments to that information.

This post will remain up until 12:00 midnight. I'll determine a "winner" via random drawing from all entries. As previously mentioned, the victor will receive a handsome Red's Trading Post cap, courtesy of WoG reader "Sam."

One last thing--I thought about requiring some sort of proof of purchase, but that's the government's MO to consider people suspect right off the bat. We operate on the honor system here at WarOnGuns. When I announce the winner tomorrow, it will be up to them to contact me at dcodrea at hotmail dot com to claim the prize.

Go on over to his blog and let him know what you bought!

Red Light Camera Corruption, AGAIN!

“My truck crossed the stop line when the light turned red. He (the hearing officer) told me that the stop line is a lateral line parallel to the curb, which is 10 feet farther out (than) where it actually starts,” Hillis says.

For red light cameras, the violation line is an imaginary one – so imaginary that it's missing from the Texas driver's handbook.

Massachusetts Is Doing It's Best To Promote Gun Crimes!

The Boston Globe reports:

"The number of licensed gun owners in Massachusetts has declined by more than a quarter in the past six years, a falloff driven by restrictive laws, higher licensing fees..."

The Smallest Minority has a good analysis of this.

Buy A Box Of Ammo on The 28th (Of August)

David over at "War On Guns" has a wonderful idea, buy a box of ammo on the 28th to protest the anti-gun protesters!

Apparently the Brady Anti-gun Nuts are calling for a national protest on the 28th to protest 'illegal gun traffiking' (which we all know they mean any gun sales). So, David came up with this gem:

I'm going to try and start a blog swarm at WarOnGuns to get gun owners to buy a box of ammo on Aug 28--be nice if gun stores would offer some sort of nominal discount or a door prize (no purchase necessary to enter, just to keep things legal) or some such on that day to encourage this--Tuesdays may typically be slow days anyway, so this would get people in their stores and probably work out to their profit.

It'd be nice unintended consequences for the Bradys if we could demonstrate a few percentage points of sales increases on that day because of this.

I'm in! I'll be going over and getting some ammo!

Gun Control Works!

A British citizen was killed in New Jersey but, since New Jersey has such tight gun laws, he wasn't shot. Obviously, gun control works!

Paul Ritch, of Penarth, Wales, was on a two-week vacation in the United States and was visiting friends in the Cherry Hill area.

The Atlantic City Prosecutor's Office says the 37-year-old had gone to the beach, ate dinner and visited some night spots Saturday before the stabbing occurred early Sunday.

The county medical examiner's office says Ritch sustained a single knife wound to the heart.

Ritch was listed in a 2002 poll of Britain's 50 most eligible bachelors by Company magazine, and was named the 12th most eligible man in Wales in a local newspaper the same year.

The South Wales Echo newspaper says Ritch worked as a swimming and fitness instructor in Cardiff, Wales.

China threatens to trigger US dollar crash

The Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US Treasury bonds if Washington imposes trade sanctions to force a yuan revaluation.

US Treasury secretary Henry Paulson and Chinese president Hu Jintao: China threatens to trigger US dollar crash
Henry Paulson, the US Treasury secretary, met with Chinese president Hu Jintao in Beijing last week

Two Chinese officials at leading Communist Party bodies have given interviews in recent days warning, for the first time, that Beijing may use its $1,330bn (£658bn) of foreign reserves as a political weapon to counter pressure from the US Congress. Shifts in Chinese policy are often announced through key think tanks and academies.

Described as China's "nuclear option" in the state media, such action could trigger a dollar crash at a time when the US currency is breaking down through historic support levels.

It would also cause a spike in US bond yields, hammering the US housing market and perhaps tipping the economy into recession.

Store Evicted Because Owner Doesn't Speak Spanish

Tom McKenna is a longtime Stuart businessman who speaks only English.

He says that's why he's being kicked out of the storefront on South Dixie Highway where he has run Seacoast Water Care for seven years.

"I don't know how else to put it," said McKenna, 51.

I'm not sure I do either.

On July 5 — the day after Independence Day — McKenna received a letter from landlord Ivan Munroe telling him to consider another location.

Munroe said in his letter he wants to have "quality tenants serving the Spanish need in the area."

"I guess I don't serve the 'Spanish need,' whatever that means," McKenna said.

Apparently the signs for Seacoast Water Care don't fit in. They're in English.

Munroe pretty much admitted that's one of the reasons he wants McKenna to move.
